Zakir Hussain College renamed, again with its heritage name

In an attempt to connect with its heritage when it was called the Delhi college, The Zakir Husain College officially changed its name to Zakir Husain Delhi College.

Calling it a moment of history when "time had paused," Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal unveiled the new name of the college at a function held at the college premises.
 
The college, which had been known as Delhi College since 1824, was renamed Zakir Husain College in 1975.
 
"The real roots of Delhi University lie in the Zakir Husain Delhi college. The people who taught here also taught in Delhi University," Sibal said.
 
"To take the country ahead, we have to invest in education. In our country, 200 million children never reach college. How can a nation survive with this kind of number"? Sibal said.
 
Sibal said that in developed countries a greater number of the youth attended college and due to these weak statistics India continued to be a developing country.
 
Some of the speakers on the occasion asked Sibal to provide money to create a better infrastructure for the college.
   
Sibal said a new multistoreyed academic block would be constructed for the college equipped with all modern amenities.
 
In the new building, courses would be conducted for unemployed women and youth also, Sibal said. The college falls in Sibal's Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency.

Sibal also praised DU Vice chancellor Dinesh Singh saying he had used his emergency powers to pass the proposal for the change in name, Sibal said.
 
The Vice Chancellor welcomed the move to link the college's past and present identities. "The college is one of the University's navratnas," he said.
   
College Principal Aslam Parvez said the college regularly produced excellent results in Delhi University and thanked Sibal for his support.
