India signed an agreement with Trinidad and Tobago to share its traditional medicine knowledge system with the south Caribbean country.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh between the Ministries of Health on the two sides. It will operate through the establishment of an Ayurveda Chair in the University of West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago.
A separate MoU for the creation of this chair will be signed between the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and University of West Indies.
From Indias side, the agreement was signed by Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad while on the behalf of the Caribbean country, visiting Minister for Foreign Affairs and Communications Surujrattan Rambachan signed it.
Azad said India has well-developed systems of traditional medicine which hold tremendous potential in the global health scenario.
"Trinidad and Tobago, which has 42 per cent population of people of Indian origin, will be able to easily appreciate the benefits of Ayurveda as a system for preventing and curing diseases and promoting good health,” Azad said.
He said an information cell in this respect was being set up at the Indian High Commission at Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. "The Cell will help disseminate knowledge and deal with queries about Indian traditional systems of medicine amongst the people of Trinidad and Tobago", the Minister said.
