Bhopal: MLB College's final year students shuts door on dress code

The final year students of the MLB Girls' College have refused to follow the prescribed dress code after the controversial norm was implemented in the college. Meanwhile, the employees of the district collector office started wearing the new office uniform, albeit unwillingly.

Both the employees and students alike feel that the dress code has been imposed on them.

Graduation and post graduation students of science, arts and commerce streams have refused to wear the college uniform.

"We only have a few months left in this college before we pass out, so getting a new dress stitched would be an additional financial burden on our parents," say the girls on the condition of anonymity.

The other hand, the students say, "We have no other option but to come to the college like school students in uniform."

However, the college management is determined to implement the dress code on the campus. "Only the final year students are opposing to the dress code," said Manjula Sharma, principal, MLB College. "We can't fulfil their demands. They have to wear the uniforms," she said.

Meanwhile, after the district collector's office, the employees of more offices in the district administration are expected to follow the dress code. However, all the women employees at the collectorate and a large number of male employees are yet to follow the prescribed office uniform code at the collector's office.

About 30 employees were found not wearing the uniform on Tuesday. Employees termed the shortage of dress materials for the uniforms as the reason for not wearing uniforms.

"We are facing a shortage of dress material," additional collector Deepak Saxena told TOI. "We are contributing and arranging some amount to provide dress material for the employees so that they can stitch their uniforms," he added.

The dress material is being supplied by the office to maintain uniformity in colour.

The dress code for the employees of the collector office is sky blue shirt and navy blue pants. However, the dress code for female employees and the other offices of the district is yet to be decided.

"The other offices of district administration like SDM office will have dress code in a week's time," collector Nikunj Shrivastav said.
