The Centre has approved setting up of an endowment chair on Consumner Protection Law and Jurisprudence with a fund of nearly Rs one crore at Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU), the first of its kind in the state.
Disclosing this at a consultative meeting at the university, its Vice Chancellor V Vijayakumar the intention behind the chair was to analyse a particular branch of law and develop expertise in the area.
Stating that it would have create awareness among the general public about the benefits of the Consumer Protection Act, he said 'we plan to float an one-year post graduate diploma programme on consumer law which will focus on protection of consumers' rights and not be job oriented.
'The diploma also aimed at equipping people to represent themselves before a consumer forum, he said.
Referring to the National Law School of India University at Bangalore, he said the union government had established four chairs the Ministry of Commerce chair on the World Trade Organisation, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment chair on juvenile justice, Ministry of Human Resources Development chair on intellectual property rights and Ministry of Consumer Affairs chair on consumer lawthere.
TNDALU's contribution would be Rs 85 lakh and the centre the balance of Rs 10 lakh.
Addressing the meeting, Joint Director of Chennai Municipal Administration Z Mahabooba said a change in the Rent Control Law was one of the mandatory reforms listed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
