The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to revise the intermediate course syllabus from the next academic year, to prepare medical aspirants for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Examination (NEET) for all the MBBS and undergraduate programmes in medical colleges across India. State School Education Minister K Pardhasaradhi told this to reporters.
Pardhasaradhi said that a decision to revise the syllabus of the intermediate courses for the NEET would come into implementation in the state from the next academic year.
He said that since the existing intermediate course syllabus was not up to the standards form the NEET exam, the state government has written to the Union Health Ministry, seeking exemption from the NEET at least for the next two years.
The order on the exemption is expected over the next few days, he added.
NEET would be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE) in April-May 2012, under the auspices of Medical Council of India(MCI). However, Andhra Pradesh government, like a few other states, had informed the Centre that students would require more time to switch to the new system and get acquainted with syllabus prescribed by the MCI.
The Minister said that in order to improve the educational standards, the government would be recruiting teachers on a large scale.
"To improve the academic standards at the intermediate level, we have decided to set up a training institute for the college lecturers at an investment of Rs 15 crore," Pardhasaradhi said.
"In the last academic year, 50,000 teachers were recruited, while this year, another 30,000 teachers are being recruited. Once the recruitment process of the teachers is over, the student-teacher ratio will be improved," Pardhasarathi said.
