Fewer applications for new technical institutes

Experiencing a slowdown in the number of applications to start new institutes, the All India Council for Technical Education has received fewer applications for the year 2012-13, as compared to the previous years.

For the year 2012, the AICTE has received a total of 400 applications across the country for new institutes, in various disciplines, such as technology, engineering, management, architecture, applied art, computer application and hotel management. However, the figure stands as 1067 applications for the year 2011 and 2,176 for 2010.

SS Mantha, acting chairman of the AICTE told that, on the request of few, they have extended the deadline for submitting proposals to start new institutes for the year 2012.

According to the acting chairman of AICTE, the current economic slowdown could be one reason for such a sloppy trend. Presently, as the market trend is fluctuating, people are trying to play safe by adopting a wait-and-watch policy.

Another reason behind this sluggish trend is that, the demand being less in specific areas. Most of the vacancies are found in institutes situated in rural areas, especially in specific branches that do not provide good employment opportunities. Apart from that, poor quality of education offered by some institutes also incorporate to the sloth, Mantha told.

Due to numerous engineering seats lying vacant each year, the AICTE has lowered the entry bar this year, but in spite of this, all the seats in the engineering colleges could not be occupied.

Several states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Orissa have requested the AICTE not to permit new engineering institutes for the year 2012-13.
