Much is talked about by government and other agencies about preventing global warming and about saving the environment and promoting an eco-friendly and energy saving lifestyle.
A small school in Bilathikulam has done more than just talk; it has incorporated this philosophy into its everyday activities.
B.E.M. UP School, Bilathikulam has programmes to promote a plastic-free environment, save energy, plant and distribute seedlings, and cultivates vegetables in the school premises.
“We want to change this school into a distinct one holding dear the values of life and love of nature. All the teachers and students have joined me to make it a big success,” said headmaster of the school, Alex Jacob.
“This school has excelled greatly in all areas in a short period. The change is unbelievable; the entire setup has changed.
Our children are self-sufficient and they want to preserve nature for future generations too. We all welcomed their venture of selling cloth bags,” says Mr Sunil, who owns a shop near the school.
This unusual school has promoted agriculture cultivation in association with the Mathrubumi seed programme, and has begun other useful and innovative programmes, says Ms Neelima, a teacher at the school.
“Apart from the eco-friendly promotion, we have Unarvu, a programme for supporting financially backward students, and have issued health cards to all students.”
Christmas cards this year were made on the theme of “No plastic”. There were exhibitions of herbs and crops.
The B.E.M. UP School children made cloth and paper bags and sold them.
After observing the activities of the school, MLA Pradeep Kumar has allotted funds from his MLA fund to set up a science lab called Pedagogy Park in the school.
The role of parents and their support is a major factor in the success of the programmes, said
Mr Raju, a member of the office staff at B.E.M. UP School.
