WB Governor supports University bill

Updated on: Monday, December 26, 2011

West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan said he was fully in agreement with the West Bengal University Laws (Amendment) bill, 2011, passed in the state Assembly as a step to end political interference in appointments in educational institutions.

"I am fully in agreement with the bill, otherwise I would not have allowed it to be introduced in the Assembly," the Governor told reporters on the sidelines of the 56th convocation of Jadavpur University here.

The purpose was to improve the quality of education, he said, expressing hope that the bill would be able to free university from political influence.

The passage of the bill would enable the government to dissociate itself from the process of appointment of vice-chancellors of several universities in the state.

State's Higher Education minister Bratya Basu, who tabled the bill in the House yesterday, said that amendments were aimed at bringing in transparency in the appointment of vice-chancellors and also to free the universities of political interference and to bring about excellence in education.

According to the Bill, V-Cs would be appointed by a search committee which would have nominees of the Chancellor, chairman of UGC and court.

"We have intentionally not kept any nominee of the government", Basu told the assembly.
