Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said more than 2,300 posts, including 150 faculty positions, would be created at the AIIMS for providing additional manpower to the premier medical institute.
"More than 2,300 posts, which include 150 faculty positions, are being created to provide additional manpower at the Institute," Azad said while addressing the gathering at the 39th Convocation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here.
A total of 465 degrees including awards were given to medical students by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who was the chief guest at the function. In order to overcome the faculty shortage, Azad said the ceiling on age limit was raised from 60 to 70 years.
"DNB qualifications were recognised for appointment as faculty and teacher student ratio was relaxed from 1:1 to 1:2 for post-graduate and super-speciality courses. Medical colleges were permitted to start PG courses in pre and para clinical disciplines at the stage of third renewal without waiting for recognition," he said.
"To have more doctors, the existing cap of maximum intake for MBBS has been raised from 150 to 250 and financial assistance is being provided to the state government-owned medical colleges for infrastructure upgradation," he added.
Along with the increase in faculty members, the Health Minister also said many infrastructure expansion projects of AIIMS that were held up for several years, are now under rapid implementation. "Approval of the statutory authorities is expected soon for the new surgical block, mother and child centre and the new OPD Block. Work on the Convergence Block and underground parking is already under-way, construction of the new Hostel Block and underground connectivity with the Trauma Centre would start within this month," Azad said.
Azad also spoke of several path breaking initiatives that the government has undertaken to help people live healthy and productive lives. Nearly 600 district hospitals, 2,721 community health centres, 5,459 primary health centres, and 31,001 health sub- centres have been taken up for new construction and
renovation. "Six new AIIMS will be fully functional by the end of next year," he said.
Presently, the AIIMS has a total bed strength of 2,424. During the preceding year, the institute attended to 25,54,860 patients in OPD and Casualty, admitted 1,62,267 patients and performed 1,49,365 surgical procedures.
Interventions in polio eradication have resulted in new polio cases reduced from 741 in 2009 to 42 in 2010, the Health Minister said, adding that there has been only one polio case so far this year.
