Odisha announces teachers pay hike, to bear Rs 72.88 cr extra

Fulfilling a long standing demand of about 25,000 teachers and school employees, Odisha government today announced enhancement of their salaries which would cost Rs 72.88 crore per annum to the state exchequer.

"The teachers and employees of 1,587 block grant high schools will get 60 per cent of basic salary being given to government school teachers plus 11 per cent as dearness allowance," School and Mass Education Minister Pratap Jena said in a statement in the assembly.

The block grant high school teachers who were till now getting Rs 4,995 as gross salary, would get Rs 8,991 from April 1, 2012. Similarly class-III employees of the schools would get Rs 4,500 per month against present salary of Rs 3,050.

However, the state government excluded 298 similar schools due to their bad performance in the previous examinations, sources said. Similarly, 224 recognised private high school from each gram panchayat will be given 60 per cent of the regular salary of teachers basing on the recommendation of the 5th pay commission in 1998. They would also get 11 per cent as DA like other teachers.

The government also decided to pay 60 per cent of the grade pay of teachers according to the 6th pay commission plus 11 per cent as DA. The new announcement would be implemented from the next fiscal, the minister said.
