Over 1,000 youths from Jammu and Kashmir have been recruited in various private firms across the country under a centrally-sponsored programme.
This programme aims at giving training and placement to over one lakh people in the state, officials said here today.
The youths today got their appointment letters, they said. "The Centre is committed to fulfill the promise of providing skill development training to one lakh youths and permanent jobs to them within the next five years," Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said addressing the first batch of 'Himayat' programme trainees here.
The programme 'Himayat' was launched by the Union Rural Development Ministry on August 21. Ramesh said all the trainees under the programme have been imparted computer skills as it has become a requirement in all the sectors of trade. The minister said he will discuss the prospect of setting up BPOs and call centres in the state with IT companies.
"There are already few call centres operating in JK but there is scope and potential for setting up more," he said. Towards the end of last year's summer unrest, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had formed a committee headed by PM's Economic Advisory Council chairman C Rangarajan to formulate a skill development training programme for youths in the state.
The expert group had submitted its report to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, recommending a five-year skill development plan entailing an annual expenditure of Rs 761 crore. Most youngsters being trained under this programme are school dropouts. The second batch of the trainees under the programme is expected to pass out by June 30, 2012.
Ramesh said the Centre will soon launch another programme 'Udaan' to provide jobs to 40,000 graduates and post graduates from the state. Appreciating the Centre for acting on Rangarajan report, Abdullah said the the employability of future batches will depend upon the performance of the first batch.
