The Seagull Foundations for the Arts in association with Seagull Books supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy of New Delhi, launched The Seagull School of Publishing in Calcutta recently.
It was inaugurated by Ann Ollestad, ambassador of Norway in the presence of Naveen Kishore, publisher, Seagull Books; Samik Bandopadhyay, founder editor, Seagull Books and dean of editing, The Seagull School of Publishing; and Sunandini Bannerjee, senior editor and graphic designer, Seagull Books and dean of design and production, The Seagull School of Publishing.
The school is a manifestation of Seagull Books vision to tutor and mentor aspiring Indian editors, designers and aspiring publishers and enable them to operate in a globalised market.
The school aims to produce skilled and competent editors and designers capable of pursuing a publishing career anywhere in the world by imparting to them the fundamentals of both the art and the science of quality publishing.
Speaking on the occasion Kishore said, “We hope to nurture and nourish the ability to source texts to fit a particular niche or field of publishing; and the ability to produce quality books and to distribute them all over the world.” The course duration will be four months, which include a month of over view and three months of specialisation in editing and design and production. The inaugural session will commence from April 2012.
Ollestad mentioned, “There is a huge potential in the publishing industry in India. Norway has also been very successful in promoting literature abroad. This project is considered to be of value and importance in promoting language publishing in India and abroad.”
The curriculum is enriched with special Saturday sessions comprising master classes and field trips to publishing houses, printing presses, book fairs, book stores as well as lectures by guest faculty from mainstream and independent presses, universities, authors and designers who will share their insights.
The school will be offering a selection of national and international internships for its students as well as a few fellowships for those aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to set up their own publishing ventures.
