More than 300 children had a narrow escape when a Panchayat Union middle school building at Terkukaraiyur here today collapsed hours ahead of a function to convert it into a high school.
The school was constructed under the Central government's Sarva Siksha Abhiyan programme only four years ago and the building has a warranty extending to ten years. Rameswaram Municipality chairman Arjunan said an inquiry would be held into the incident.
The children escaped from any injuries as they had gathered outside the school ahead of the function.
The plight of many government school buildings are in a highly deplorable state without adequate lighting, improper ventilation, poorly maintained toilets or without any toilets, no proper drinking water facilities and dingy enviroment.
