Patnaik picks apart education system

Updated on: Thursday, December 15, 2011

Marxist economist and former vice-chairman of the state planning board Prabhat Patnaik has criticized the education system in the country calling it 'highly commoditized'. Speaking at a seminar on higher education in India organized by the Kannur University students' union he said the present approach to education is 'destructive of creativity, sensitivity and criticality'.

He said the education system introduced in India by Macaulay was aimed to create organic intellectuals of colonial order but Gandhi wanted to reject this and set up institutions like Kashi Vidyapith to chisel talents.
