Punjab asks Centre to ease recruitment norms for EGS teachers

Punjab government today asked the Centre to suitably relax the condition of Teacher Eligibility Test(TET) for recruitment of the Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) teachers in the state as a one-time measure.

Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was fully symathetic to the problems of the EGS teachers and wanted to help them. However, the central government laws came in the way of taking appropriate decision on EGS teachers demand, he said.

Sekhwan said the issue had come up for discussion during a meeting which the representatives of the EGS teachers had with Badal at the latter's residence here yesterday. He said that during the meeting, Badal had assured the representatives that Punjab government would go extra mile to facilitate the recruitment of these candidates by seeking a special one-time relaxation for existing teachers in this
category.

He said any order issued by Punjab government in violation of the standing rules would render the order infructuous and illegal, landing both the teachers and the government in an embarrassing position. Demanding government jobs, the adhoc EGS teachers are on agitation against government at Gidderbaha in Muktsar district of the state for the past fortnight.

The slapping of an agitating woman EGS teacher by a local Shiromani Akali Dal leader in public recently had caused an outrage, leading to the leader's arrest before he was released on bail. The teachers' delegation wanted to meet Harsimrat Kaur, wife of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal with their demand, during a function at Gidderbaha.
