Teachers' bodies oppose AMU meet to choose next VC

Two teachers' bodies have urged the President to postpone AMU's executive council meet, saying the Vice Chancellor, who would chair the meeting to select his successor, is embroiled in "serious" graft charges.

Federation of Central Universities Teachers' Associations (FEDCUTA) and AMU Teachers' Association (AMUTA) have appealed
to the President, who is also the varsity's Visitor, to postpone and "restrain" VC P K Abdul Azis from chairing the meeting, scheduled for December 13.

The meeting would select a person for the university's top post from a panel of five names.

The associations have said Azis is under inquiry from three different central agencies, including the CBI.

A resolution passed by AMUTA yesterday said it would be a travesty of justice if a person facing serious graft charges is allowed to chair a meeting to select his own successor.

"Azis is leaving no stone unturned in brow-beating and pressurising the executive council members, most of whom are his direct subordinates, for manipulating the selection process," AMUTA secretary Mustafa Zaidi told reportersay.

Zaidi said if the HRD allows the December 13 meeting to go through, all the right thinking persons should "boycott the
selection process" to register their protest.

In a separate memorandum earlier, the FEDCUTA, had warned if the central government allows Azis "to get away with his designs", it would lead to far reaching damage to AMU.

The FEDCUTA had also alleged Azis has a "nexus" with politicians and was getting his way through with their assistance.
