In a step to check school dropouts, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced an increase in monthly allowances to students of AdiDravidar, Backward and Most Backward Class communities, benefiting about two lakh youths.
This would cost the government a total additional expenditure of over Rs 40 crore every year, a government release said.
Monthly allowances of school going students studying in government owned hostels have been increased to Rs 650 per month from the existing Rs 450.Similarly, college going students would get Rs 750 compared to the present Rs 550.
Giving the break up, the release said 1,20,015 students of Adidravidar communities and 74,302 students of backward and most backward communities stand to benefit from this exercise, costing the exchequer an additional expenditure of Rs 25.19 crore and Rs 15.32 crore per year respectively.
The monthly allowances for students staying at government approved private hostels would also be included in this scheme, it said, adding, 1,948 students staying in 39 private hostels across Tamil Nadu would be benefitted.
This scheme would cost an additional expenditure Rs 38.96 lakh to the government, the statement added.
