On the occasion of Children’s Day the Directory on Educational Infrastructure was introduced to the citizens of the city of joy. The event was chaired by Kartik Manna the chairperson of Sarva Siksha Mission.
The occasion was graced by prominent government officials supporting the noble act of overseeing the implementation of the right to education. The directory has been compiled through a survey of educational centres across 141 wards of Kolkata.
The surveillance has been conducted by Save the Children through consultant agencies – Community Action Society with the help of 25 other organisations. The directory includes a detailed study of government and KMC schools and ICDS centres in Kolkata.
Name, address and enrolment status of the schools are provided which will be very useful for the government, NGOs, schools and other bodies. The directory has been furnished with maps to facilitate awareness among the urban deprived masses. It will be available at the local schools and educational centres, NGO offices and local clubs.
Kartik Manna said that free access to necessary information would bring about quality education, thus the most essential element is to bring about acquired information which is ideally the major reason behind the launch of the school directory.
“Many areas have seen children deprived from going to schools even after the implementation of the right to education on April 1, 2010 because they lack the basic awareness of free and compulsory education which can be availed from the government funded institutions. I hope this facility mapping would imbibe awareness to the deprived children,” said Manobendra Nath Ray, state programme head, Save the Children.
