The Andhra Pradesh High Court stayed the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical course in the state.
The proposed switch from state-level entrance exams to the NEET is being opposed by some states.
N Appa Rao and four others, formerly associated with Indian Medical Council, have filed a writ petition saying that introduction of NEET from the current academic year would harm interests of Andhra Pradesh students in a big way.
Justice Vilas Afzalpurkar today stayed NEET (in the state), posting the mater for hearing after four weeks.
NEET would be conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in April-May 2012 under the auspices of MCI, and the medium would be English/Hindi.
According to the state data, about 65,000 students appear for the medical seats of the Eamcet exam (held at the state level) every year, and nearly 25,000 of them write the exam in Telugu.
The state government as well as the students apprehend that sudden change of medium and syllabus will become a handicap.
The state government had reportedly written to Union Health ministry, seeking exemption for students from Andhra Pradesh from NEET at least for two years.
