Reforms in legal education and legal profession would effectively deal with the competition posed by the imminent entry of foreign law firms into the country, Vice Chancellor of O P Jindal Global University, C Raj Kumar, said.

Such an effort would also restore the faith in the Indian legal system and its ability to deal with issues relating to access to justice and delays in the justice delivery mechanism, he said at a seminar on "Globalisation of Legal Education and Legal Profession", organised by the Nagercoil Bar Association.

Kumar, also a member of the National Legal Knowledge Council, said there was a need for continuing legal education for lawyers to bridge the knowledge gap to meet the challenges of working in new and evolving areas of law including international trade and intellectual property rights.

"There is a need for focussing on raising the quality of legal education through reforms in teaching pedagogy and research methodology that will empower the students and graduates of law to seize the opportunities that globalisation provides for lawyers", he said.

Emphasising the importance of training and capacity building initiatives for the judiciary, he welcomed the establishment of the National Judicial Academy and state judicial academies with a view to focusing on judicial training.

Noting the changes taking place in the legal profession and the opportunities, he said today's law graduates have many options of careers in law that went well beyond litigation in court practice.
