Even as the Nagpur University is yet to initiate action against erring colleges, which allegedly duped the students on the pretext of getting them admissions even if they were ineligible, academicians say NU can take action of disaffiliation under Section 81 of Maharashtra Universities (MU) Act, 1994.
TOI, on Wednesday, had exposed as to how Bapusaheb Mahashabde College on Umrer Road allegedly duped about seven students under pretext of getting them admission into MA Mass Communication even as they were not eligible. These students were earlier rejected by the Dhanwate National College as well as NU's Department of Mass Communication.
"Yes, the university can take action against any such college which fails to not complying with the norms prescribed by it," NU's standing counsel Bhanudas Kulkarni told TOI.
Earlier also, NU failed to take action against erring colleges like Maa Jagdamba and Central India Institute of Mass Communication (CIIMC) when they admitted ineligible students and wasting their precious year and money. Ironically, NU top brass failed to learn from past incidents where the university had suffered worst ever attacks from the aggrieved students.
Sources said, NU can even refer the matter to Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC).
Senate member and DAC chairman Mohan Bajpayee said apart from the management, students were to be blamed equally as they should have been aware of the minimum eligibility criteria. He added that the Mahashabde College's act was very "fishy" as prescribed norms were not changed since the inception of the course.
"The institution is at fault as either they did not know about NU's guidelines or did not bother to follow it. Strict action should be taken against them," "It's strange that a communication teaching college had a communication gap with its students,"
remarked DNC coordinator Baban Nakhale, who himself rejected these students.
"The institution is at fault as either they did not know about NU's guidelines or did not bother to follow it. Strict action should be taken against them," he insisted.
Senate member Ritesh Ganar said every college should follow the do's and don'ts laid down by NU. "The college management should have rejected the students instead of this selfish act of making money."
Abhijeet Mahashabde, representing the management, however blamed it on the MKCL and also tardy procedures for submitting the forms in NU.
"The hassles of submitting forms are too many. The problems are compounded after NU extended last date of admission to September 29. Moreover, the online enrolment doesn't accept any eligibility criteria and accepts all the forms. Till time, we came to know, it was too late," he clarified.
