Students who are appearing for the HSC and SSC board exams this academic year and wish to seek grace marks for excellence in sports will have to submit their certificates to the authorities before March 1.
However, beginning next year, students will be able to avail of the 25 additional marks only if they fail to get the mandatory passing marks.
School education minister Rajendra Darda said, “Many students appearing for the board exams apply for availing of the grace marks given for the sports quota. It is observed that these students submit their certificates after the written exams are completed. At times, the delay in submitting these certificates create problems while computing the marks and preparing the marksheet. In order to streamline the procedure, the department has decided that these grace marks would be given only to those who submit their certificates before March 1.”
The minister added that not every student will be given grace marks from the next academic year onwards. “The decision has been taken to grant these grace marks only if a student fails to meet the necessary minimum marks for passing. To make students and schools aware about the changes in the system, a detailed circular will be issued within a fortnight,” Darda said.
After it was introduced in 2007, there has been a sharp rise in the number of students availing of the grace marks policy. TOI recently reported about the displeasure expressed by the department over the rise in “bogus claims” by students to get the extra marks.
