Students of engineering colleges affiliated to the Mahamaya Technical University are in a quandary as they may be barred from giving their first semester examinations. According to sources, the students were admitted by the colleges to fill up empty seats even though they did not fulfill the basic criteria required by the university. The university has given the students till November 28 to submit the required documents failing which they may not be allowed to give the first semester examination due to take place in a week.
Earlier, officials had found that almost 1,000 students in different courses and colleges affiliated with the university had gotten admission despite not meeting minimum requirements. "We found that colleges took in students to fill up the empty seats even though students were not qualified for the same," said an official.
The university had also found that a number of students had gotten admission even though they had not submitted all of the required documents to the university. As a result, the admission of such students was rejected. However, these students were given one last opportunity to submit the incomplete documents by the November 28. "Acceptance of all rejected students by the university will be possible only after the investigation of original documents," said PP Saxena, registrar of MTU.
University officials met on Sunday to discuss various issues revolving around the first semester examination, which is due to take place next month. However, according to sources, no decision has been made regarding the students who had previously been found wanting in terms of meeting the minimum requirements of the university. "The situation has put the university in a very tough spot. If students do not meet the minimum criteria, how can we allow them to sit for the university examinations," said a senior university official.
During admissions of this academic year, university officials had said that almost 60 per cent of the seats in the university would go empty after only a fraction of the students who got through the entrance examination had turned up for counselling. The procedure for admissions into the university is through counselling following the Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE). But after the counseling, if the seats aren't filled up, then the university authorizes the colleges to admit students on their own. However, the colleges are required to ensure that the students meet the minimum requirements of the university.
