The fifth induction and pledge taking ceremony of Udayan Shalini Fellowship Programme under the aegis of Udayan Care, West Bengal Chapter, took place at Kala Mandir.
The occasion was graced by the governor of West Bengal M K Narayanan and Union Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi along with several other renowned people from the corporate world namely Suresh Neotia, Hari Prasad Budhia and S K Roy.
This noble endeavour is supported by several top notch corporate bodies like Ambuja Realty, B D Sureka Group of Companies, Emta Coal Ltd, Emami Malai Kesar and Infinity Infotech Parks Ltd.
The programme touches the lives of several young girls by providing financial assistance to needy girl students while it also assists young students with a mentor for academic assistance, value goal setting and career counseling.
Several kinds of workshops are also organised to facilitate all round development of the students. M K Narayanan, governor, said, “It is a scholarship programme with a difference. It does more than providing support to girls.” Around 65 new children were inducted to the program in addition to the existing 450.
Talking about the noble purpose Kusum Bhandari, convenor, Udayan Shalini Fellowship Programme said, “As part of this annual event, this year we are proud to be inducting another 65 children under the fold of this scholarship. In fact we are very encouraged at what we have been giving back to the society through this programme.”
The fellowship reaches out to change the lives of deserving yet disadvantaged girls who live with their natural biological parents. The fellowship was first started in Delhi with, seventy two girls in 2002.
Today the fellowship is spread across five different cities of Delhi, Kurukshetra, Dehradun, Aurangabad and Kolkata with over 2200 beneficiaries. The process of selecting the girls include the three tier procedure if Needs, Ambition and Talent. The girls are also emcouraged to give back 50 hours of social work a year.
