The Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy, the specialist resource centre for cerebral palsy celebrated its 37th birth anniversary with the US consulate general, Dean Thompson and his wife Jane Thompson inaugurating the exhibition titled ‘Flights into Fantasy.’
The unique exhibition put up by the students with assistance from their teachers to commemorate the event, covered myths and stories from across the world. Every class had students narrating a story with the help of their teachers with their attire and the class décor elucidating a tale.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Greek mythology, Tuntuni and the Barber, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Golden Reed Pipe: a folktale from China, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, The Selfish Giant, Goopi Gayen Bagha Bayen and snippets from the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata were the chosen themes.
IICP products like food, silk-screen, envelopes, paper bags and block printing stuff were on sale. Having embarked on a journey to stand by the disabled since 1974, IICP has served a population of over 10,000 disabled people and around 30,000 rehabilitation professionals, parents, grass-root workers, community members, medical practitioners and family members who have been oriented to disability.

“At the outset I’m very impressed with the way IICP is reaching out and educating people with disability. I’m extraordinarily humbled to hear about US linkages which will ensure a better future for people with cerebral palsy incorporating new and developed technology,” said Dean Thompson.
IICP is the first and at present the only National Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication in India and is working with advocacy groups nationally and internationally for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
