The Hindu Young World painting competition was started way back in 1992 as an initiative to encourage students in art. Students from across India were asked to paint and send in their entries by post to The Hindu. The response was overwhelming with 5000 entries in the inaugural year.
In the following years, the painting competition was welcomed with more enthusiasm which encouragedThe Hinduto tie up with schools across the nation and hold the annual painting competition in 15 centres.
Subsequently, in 2007, it was decided that all this precious talent should be highlighted for all to see and selected paintings of the winners of the consolation prizes in the senior and junior categories were displayed in popular art galleries in the city.
On display
This year too, in an effort to showcase more of the paintings,The Hinduin association with Lalit Kala Akademi will have on display more than 600 paintings for six days. This is an exhibition-cum-sale of paintings that would include the “Winners' Wall”, where the top three winners each from the 15 centres (Juniors and Seniors) would be displayed. All proceeds from the sale of these paintings would go towards funding a social cause.
