Known to have founded one of the first private engineering colleges in West Bengal that has been running management and engineering programmes for nearly 21 years, Institute of Engineering and Management (IEM) Trust has set up a private state university – University of Engineering and Management (UEM) in Jaipur.
With a 32-acre lush green campus, UEM is strategically located on the National Highway NH-11 within the driving distance of New Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon.
The varsity will have GK Pillai, former home secretary, Government of India as its chancellor and Dr Satyajit Chakrabarti, director of IEM, Kolkata as its vice-chancellor.
The courses offered include B Tech and M Tech in CSE, ECE, Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and Agricultural Engineering besides MBA and PhD. The IEM group is in talks with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA for collaboration to conduct MIT syllabus in UEM along with teacher and student exchange programmes.
UEM will have professors from IIT, IIM, XLRI, NITIE and teachers from top institutes and universities in India and abroad. It will be offering various undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to meritorious students and a 33 per cent scholarship to children of school, college and university teachers, children of police, firefighters and army, navy and air force personnel.
The preeminent features include reimbursement of students’ train or bus fares to their homes twice a year and complete refund of fees to those students who fail to get placements on completion of the respective courses. However, these features pertain to the first batch of UEM as of now.
“The university will focus on high end research in various areas of engineering and management. Students already studying in other colleges who switch to UEM will get tuition fee waiver for their first semester, so that they do not have to pay their first semester fee twice. We have 60 seats for each course and aim to achieve exemplary academic discipline,” said Dr Satyajit Chakrabarti.
With low fees to enable those from the middle class to avail of high quality education, UEM is equipped with modern facilities on campus including advanced laboratories and integrated libraries.
