Five-year honours course begins at law varsity

Chennai: The classes for the five-year B.A. B.L. (Hons) course at Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU) began on Wednesday.

While speaking to students, the Madras High Court Chief Justice H.L. Gokhale appreciated those who had secured high marks in their Class XII examinations, for gaining admission to the university.

The Chief Justice said that they could contribute a lot to society by using the knowledge they gained in the course of their studies responsibly.

He urged the students to put forth the knowledge they gain to help out litigants who needed their expertise.

Speaking about the untoward incidents on the Madras High Court campus in February, Mr. Justice Gokhale said that a section of lawyers had taken the law into their own hands. Since then the situation had diluted drastically.

The Vice-Chancellor, TNDALU, S. Sachidanandam said that the education provide at the University was on par with the best law schools in the country. Legal awareness among the public had to improve and law students could help in this.

Prof. Sachidanandam said that the admissions process for the regular five-year B.A. B.L. course would start soon. Counselling would possibly start this month.

Later talking to press persons, Prof. Sachidanandam said 70 seats were available for the Honours programme in the regular stream. Around 12 Non-Resident Indians (NRI) were given admission this year.
