Students of IIM, Kozhikode under the banner Social Service Group (SSG) have taken it upon themselves to help socially and economically disadvantaged students, especially from Malayalam medium government schools.
The SSG members are currently preparing for the second career counselling programme for Class X students in Kozhikode. In September, they had conducted a one-day career counselling programme for around 120 Class X students in the Kozhikode education district and it had been a huge success.
“It was an eye-opening session. I wanted to pursue Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. The programme gave a lot of insights into both these branches,” said a participant Aswin Prasanth of Ilahia HSS, Koyilandi.
“We organise tailor-made programmes for tenth and Plus-two students. The classes, along with presentations, are followed by a doubt-clearing session. The careers range from engineering and medicine to hotel management and journalism,” said Shashikiran C.S, SSG member and second year student.
For Chitralekha V.R. of Government Girls HSS, Koyilandi who wants to pursue journalism, the programme gave more information on journalism courses not only in India, but also abroad and ways to get admissions. All speakers except one took classes in Malayalam. “But the speaker who did not know Malayalam spoke in an English that we also understood,” she said.
The SSG targeted mainly students from Malayalam medium Government schools and also those from rural areas. “The entire programme was free-of-cost and we also gave them booklets in English. We are planning to have another session next week,” said Jithin C.R., member SSG and IIMK first year student.
The SSG has plans to extend this programme to the entire state.
