In a bid to promote classical music among children, the Tamil Nadu government announced an incentive of Rs 200 per month to students enrolled in 17 state-run music schools.
The incentive, to be given for 10 months, would benefit 996 students learning vocal, nadhaswaram, bharathanatiyam, violin and others as per an order issued by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, an official release said.
The government would incur an expenditure of Rs 19.92 lakh every year for this purpose, it said.
The music schools are currently functioning at Tiruvarur, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Pudukottai, Salem, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Karur, Perambalur, Tuticorin, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Sirkazhi, Sivaganga, Krishnagiri, Erode and Ramanathapuram districts.
Besides, the government would also set up an art and culture complex in Tirunelveli district at a cost of Rs one crore.
