Careful analysis of the industry and insight into future trends in the field were essential to choose a course that would provide the right job opportunities, said Jayaprakash Gandhi, career consultant and analyst, correspondent of Narasu Sarathy Institute of Technology and director of Lotus Matriculation School.
He was addressing students at Inspira 2011, a programme conducted to facilitate last year's Plus Two toppers and provide a platform for XI and XII Standard students to interact with them, organised by Sri Sakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology.
“Out of the 525 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, students from only around 85 colleges got campus placement opportunities”, Mr. Jayaprakash said. Around 92 per cent of the engineering students, irrespective of their core subject, got into information technology field.
Commerce stream had more opportunities now, while leading companies were looking for girls in the mechanical engineering field. Electrical and electronic engineering had good scope as power generation sector was showing tremendous growth. Ocean engineering, geo-technology, earthquake engineering and vibration analysis were the emerging careers, he said. Twenty-three students who had topped the Plus Two board exam last year, around 500 students studying in Standard XI and XII from 91 schools across Tamil Nadu and Palakkad, principals and parents, took part in the programme.
The toppers who are studying in leading institutes across Tamil Nadu shared their success secrets and learning tips with their juniors. Starting from tips to understand and memorise concepts, mock tests, presentation of answer sheets and time management to taking care of health and having the right ambience while studying, the toppers presented a comprehensive success strategy to the students who are going to appear for the board exams soon.
K. Sampath Kumar, Principal, Sri Vijay Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary, Hosur, in his motivational speech, told the students that quest for knowledge, distinguishing their skills from others and differentiating good and bad, would take them to the path of success.
Shanta Kumar, Divisional Officer of Coimbatore, said that inspiring learning atmosphere at an institution could mould the students into successful persons.
Dr. V. Ponraj, Scientist and advisor to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and R. Murugesan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University of Technology, Madurai, were the chief guests at the valedictory function. Rank holders and principals of schools which excelled in the board exams were awarded cash prizes at the event.
S. Thangavelu, Chairman and T. Deepan, Managing Trustee, of Sri Sakthi College, addressed the audience.
