WB govt to retain pass-fail system from class I-VIII

The West Bengal cabinet decided to retain the pass-fail system from class I to VIII in school but decided to do away with detention of unsuccessful students.

Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting, Commerce and Industries Minister Partha Chatterjee said the pass-fail system from class I to VIII in school education would stay but no student would be detained.

"The government would like to give unsuccessful students scope for test of their merit to overcome their deficiency," Chatterjee said.

The cabinet, he said, also decided to abolish lottery system during admission from class I to VIII in all government and government-aided schools.

The minister said Chief minister Mamata Banerjee was of the view that the lottery system of admission amounted to gambling and it had an adverse effect on the mind of students.

The government, he said, also decided to have monitoring cells in each school against graft, corruption and nepotism in admission.

If there was any adverse report from any school, the state education department would be compelled to take proper action, he added.
