Group representing 'backward students' to protest in JNU

Adding to the ongoing confrontation with the JNU administration, a student group has called for a demonstration tomorrow to protest against the varsity's handling of the controversy around a 'Mahishasura' poster and purported remarks by an official in the episode.

The All India Backward Students Forum (AIBSF) has taken offence to remarks by Proctor H B Bohidar in an interview to a newspaper where he purportedly said that no other group in JNU uses the "cast card".

The group said the remarks were tantamount to calling it a "casteist organisation" and were "unsolicited and unwarranted".

The protest to be spearheaded by the AIBSF and the United Dalit Students Forum (UDSF) will be held at the administrative block tomorrow afternoon.

The group is demanding a "letter of apology" from the proctor for what it calls a "blasphemous statement". They also alleged that the administration is "falsely implicating and harassing" AIBSF president Jitendra Yadav for his role in the Mahishasura row.

The row that started with a poster circulated by the AIBSF early this month has already seen a showcause notice being sent by the University to the organisation president Jitendra Yadav for his role in releasing the religiously "offensive" material. Yadav in turn sent a legal notice back to the University.

Members of the AIBSF and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had clashed earlier this month over posters that were found "hurtful" by a section of students.
