While enthusiastic participation is a common feature of inter-collegiate cultural fests, a few city institutes are now looking at a new form of inter-college level programme. In November, two of the city’s top colleges will host a mock United Nations session at their respective colleges and the organisers are overwhelmed with the response they are receiving from participating colleges.
For the third time in a row, the Rotaract Club of Jai Hind College will host a MUN (RCJCMUN) for students from schools and colleges across the city. “Even in the first year of organising a MUN, we had received very good response from students across the city and now we are only hoping to grow,” said Yash Belani, an FYJC student of Jai Hind College, Churchgate. Last year, the hosting college welcomed over 150 delegates from various institutes and this year, they are expecting to see above 200 participants.
“A special feature of RCJCMUN is that we also give our participants an idea about the parliamentary session in Pakistan. No other MUN incorporates this feature,” added Belani. Scheduled to be held from November 11 to 13, organisers are now planning to postpone the dates. “A lot of our students have their examinations on those dates and we want to ensure that we accommodate as many interested participants as possible,” he added. The dates for the same will be announced on the college website soon.
Students of KC College in Churchgate are equally excited about the KC Model United Nations (KCMUN) session that will be hosted on the same dates as RCJCMUN. The organisers, however, are confident about this even though this would be their first attempt at a MUN. “We have already got close to 60 colleges participating for the MUN from all over India and institutes from Sri Lanka and Korea are also joining us,” said Amartya Chowdhury, an organising member. KCMUN has already got a whopping 800 delegates/ participants and 11 committees for their first session, making them the largest Mock United Nations session in the country. “We are also flying in senior delegates from international countries to chair the committees and form the executive board. The experience of being part of this MUN will be like no other,” added Chowdhury.
