The British Council School Awards Ceremony 2011, held at Hotel Shangri-la in New Delhi on October 20 awarded the prestigious International School Award to seven private schools from east India and eight government schools from Odisha and Chhattisgarh that have gone the extra mile to ensure that they provide a globally relevant learning experience to the students.
The award ceremony celebrates the exemplary work done by schools in the academic year 2010-11 in integrating international dimension in the curriculum and making global education come alive in the classroom.
Around 168 schools from different parts of India came together for the British Council School Awards Ceremony 2011 out of which 50 per cent schools were government or government-aided schools.
The awards were presented for 3 specific programmes - International School Award, Global Teacher Accreditation and an online Stamp Design contest.
The schools which won the International School Award this year from east India are: Apeejay School, Park Street, Kolkata, Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata, St. James' School, Kolkata, Techno India Group Public School, Hooghly, M C Kejriwal Vidyapeeth, Liluah, Delhi Public School, Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Kolkata.
Archana Chitnis, education minister, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh presided as the chief guest and Sir Richard Stagg, British high commissioner was the guest of honour.
The British Council school programme aims to support schools in nurturing global citizens equipped with skills, values and knowledge and capable of shouldering the task of creating a sustainable, harmonious and prosperous world for the future. Towards this aim the British Council engages with schools in the accreditation programme, International School Award, which promotes school partnerships and runs competitions and online projects on its portal, schools online (http://schoolsonline.britishcouncil.org/regions/isl).
In the past it has fostered more than 1000 schools to school partnerships and engaged with over 2000 schools in professional development workshops and student competitions. For the year 2011-12 there are 18 private schools from east India vying for the award.
