Fee Committee serves show cause notice to school

A committee to determine the fees in private schools in Tamil Nadu has served a show cause notice to a private school in the city for allegedly demanding more fees than that stipulated by it.

"For the first time, we have served a show cause notice against a school asking why their approval should not be cancelled. We found that they are collecting more fees than what was fixed," Private Schools Fee Determination Committee Chairman Justice S R Singaravelu told reporters here.

However, he declined to name the school.

Asked when all the cases would be cleared, he said it would be by the end of this academic year and that they would examine complaints next year. "Next year, we will examine complaints... whether they are complied with or violated."

He also noted that some schools under the guise of aided schools, were conducting self finance classes. However, this is not under our jurisdiction and we will soon look at it.

To a question on the number of such cases, he said it could probably be around 3,000.

The committee would take action based on the reports from the education officials of districts concerned, he said.

The committee was constituted on December 7, 2009, to determine the fee structure in private schools across the state following complaints from parents of excess fees being collected by schools.
