Khurshid skips AMU event as students, teachers protest

Updated on: Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Union Minister Salman Khurshid skipped the Founder's Day function at the Aligarh Muslim University here after protests by teachers and students who claimed that his attendance would give "legitimacy" to the Vice Chancellor who is facing graft charges.

Khurshid, who was in the city to attend the commemoration meeting of Sir Syed Day, did not turn up for the event as the slogan shouting teachers and students blocked the entry to the campus. A large number of students had gathered outside the Vice-Chancellor's lodge forcing the authorities to lock the gate.

Students carrying placards saying "Does Congress party support corruption?" raised slogans against Khurshid and Vice Chancellor Prof PK Abdul Azis, who is facing an inquiry for alleged financial irregularities.
