Orissa is a model in anti-ragging: Governor

Updated on: Tuesday, October 18, 2011

Projecting Orissa as a model for rest of the country in regards to anti-ragging ethos, Governor M C Bhandare said the state will set new standards in anti-ragging measures.

"Orissa will soon become a ragging-free state and will set a new standard in anti-ragging measures implemented so far," he said presiding over the first state-level anti-ragging committee meeting held at Raj Bhavan here.

Stating that only two cases of ragging were reported during the last three years, Bhandare said the state has a unique culture of peace and tolerance which does not necessarily permit or encourage ragging.

"Ragging is a sadistic behaviour and needs proper counselling to be checked," he said adding that anti-ragging committees had been set up at universities, districts and hostels.

The places where such committees were yet to be set up, needs to be done immediately, he said adding contact numbers of authorities such as the vice-chancellors, registrars, local collectors, SPs, dean and warden will be prominently displayed on the campuses.

The governor also cautioned that there should be clear cut differentiation between ragging and clash or quarrels. He advised VCs to hold regular counselling sessions for students to spread awareness against ragging.
