The Chennai Corporation will disburse Rs.28.5 lakh towards scholarships and incentives to students and teachers this year.
While 1,182 students will receive scholarships, a total of 935 teachers, who trained their students to score well in public examinations, will receive incentives.
Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin will distribute the scholarships at a function to be held in Kilpauk on January 20, Mayor M. Subramanian said here on Tuesday.
Geometry boxes distributed
He was participating at a function held at Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Perambur, to distribute free geometry boxes to students. Besides top scorers in public examinations, those who got admissions in medical, engineering, nursing and teacher training courses would also be given scholarships.
On the distribution of geometry boxes, he said a total of 48,043 students belonging to classes VI to XII, were given the boxes to enhance their learning. The boxes were procured at a cost of Rs.11.36 lakh.
Students felicitated
He also felicitated students of Chennai School at Perambur for scoring high and also gaining entry into medical and engineering colleges. The student strength in the school had increased from 3,948 last year to 4,071 this year.
Earlier, ward 37 councillor N. Durairaj demanded that additional classrooms be constructed to cater for the growing number of students in the school. Mayor said that as it is one of the schools of excellence, the civic body would focus on its holistic development.
