Is software testing an art or science or for that matter is it engineering? What are essential traits of a software tester? What is the market size in terms of opportunities? Will software testing career provide a sustainable growth? Are academics providing enough knowledge for choosing software testing a career?
These worries of students were cleared in detail by experts at a seminar on “Software Testing: An emerging career option for engineering and science graduates,” organised by the Reliance Global Services. The event saw students discussing and exchanging their views regarding career prospects in the software testing industry.
The session, which witnessed the presence of experts from different IT companies in twin cities, has also facilitated students to clarify their doubts and understand the opportunities and growth in the industry. Interacting with students Applabs Vice-president (Global Human Resources) Arun Rao said the software testing industry had huge potential for growth in the next few years. The worldwide software testing market is put at $13 billion and the global market for outsourced testing services would be around $6.1 billion and India is expected to corner 70 per cent of its share. The software testing would make up to 25 to 50 per cent of the software budget. The market opportunities for the Indian offshore testing companies are likely to be around $8 billion in a couple of years. “It's a booming industry for next 10 years,” Mr. Rao said. He underscored the need to understand the exciting growth phase the industry was going through and the future it has in store. Meanwhile, the Reliance Global Services has decided to partner with the leading QAI Global Institute, USA . The expected demand for software testing professionals is over 35,000 by 2011.
