The state government for the first time is going to conduct scholarship exam for lower primary (LP) and middle elementary (ME) students in March, education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The exam will be conducted under the chief minister's special scholarship scheme and the government will spend Rs 50 crore every year to provide scholarships to 1 lakh students. This scheme will also help the education department to assess the quality of education imparted by the teachers in the various schools.
The director of elementary education, Basanta Kumar Das, said, "We will conduct this exam for the first time under the CM's special scholarship scheme programme. The date has not been fixed yet, but all the preparations for conducting the exams is almost done. The exam will be conducted right after the High School leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams."
A total of eight lakh students will appear for the exams. There are five lakh students from class V and three lakh students from class VIII. This exam will be conducted for two days and all the high schools and higher secondary schools have been selected as the centres for the exam, he added.
Through this exam, a total of one lakh beneficiaries will be selected, that is, 50,000 from class V and another 50,000 from class VIII. Each beneficiary will be provided a one-time scholarship of Rs 5,000 in the form of a fixed deposit, which can be encashed by the students after five years.
The scholarship scheme will mainly help students coming from poor families, who cannot afford the cost of education. There are many parents who cannot educate their children after class VIII due to financial problems, he added.
He said, "There is no prescribed syllabus for this exam. Students have to study their school textbooks thoroughly to crack this exam."
