As part of the ongoing Victoria India Doctoral Scholarship (VIDS) Program, which is a strategic engagement opportunities initiated by the Victorian Government to strengthen bilateral relationships between Victoria and India,top ten PhD scholars from India will be awarded $90,000 AUD each and have their fees waived at one of nine universities, in Victoria, Australia, beginning in 2013.
Launched by the State Government of Victoria and the Australia India Institute, the ten new scholarships will support living costs and education related travel that will extend over the duration of the students doctoral studies.
Victorias universities have agreed to provide a full tuition fee waiver.
Ms. Louise Asher, Victorias Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business,launching the second year programme at Taj Connemara in Chennai, told more than 200 guests at the launch by video message that the scholarships would contribute to global knowledge and build a closer partnership between India and Australia.
“We launched VIDS last year and have already seen some impressive results that will bring India and Victoria closer”.
“Close to 150,000 international students are already studying in Victoria because our premium education and training system offers qualifications recognised around the world. This creates a strong basis for future careers”.
“We believe the Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships will generate great interest because Victoria offers a premium international education experience in a State capital that was voted the most liveable city in the world in August 2011 by an international ratings agency,” she said.
Others present at the launch program were Mr. Geoffrey Conaghan, Victorias Commissioner to India, Professor Amitabh Mattoo, Director of the Australia India Institute, and David Holly, Australias Consul-General for South India.
Speaking at the launch in Chennai, Mr Conaghan said the 2013 scholarship offer was one of the most lucrative available for Indian scholars: “This is a great opportunity for some of India's brightest and best researchers to pursue their PhD studies at Victoria's world renowned universities.”
“We want Indias finest research scholars, so we are offering the most lucrative scholarships currently available in India”.
Professor Amitabh Mattoo spoke at launch that the “scholarships were a critical part of the Victorian Governments strategy to build a strong bilateral partnership with India and congratulated the Victorian Government “.
“Research students from India will not just get access to some of the finest institutions in the world but also the opportunity to stay in one of its most liveable cities- Melbourne.”
“The 2012 program attracted a high calibre of students from across India who are now Ambassadors for the program and living in Victoria,” Professor Mattoo said.
