An international scholarship for high school students offered by OISCA, an environmental organization based in Japan, helps many students from the district pursue studies in Japan, scaling new heights in their career in the bargain.
This year two students, Javad Babu, from Dayapuram Residential High School, Dayapuram and Rahul Mohan, from Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Chevayoor, were selected for the scholarship that will allow them to pursue a two year “Plus two” course at the OISCA Academy in Japan
Rahul Mohan said he never dreamt of winning the scholarship as there were about 16 students at the written test. “The OISCA scholarship board shortlisted 10 students for the interview and only two of us were selected,” he added. However, he is worried about his absence from home during the time. “I will miss my family,” he said with a sigh, adding, “Anyway, it is for my good, to learn more.”
Rahul said the students will undergo a three month language course in Japanese. “Moreover, the food will also be quite different,” he added. However, he is relieved that four students from the city and neighbouring districts are already at the academy.
Another boy, Jawad, selected for the scholarship said all his friends at school are excited and proud as their friend is going to Japan for higher studies. “I will come back and will attempt the IAS exam, which I feel is a better position to serve the masses,” Jawad said, adding the exposure will help him get closer to his goal.
Mr Aravind Babu, Director, OISCA, South India Zone said “The students were selected through the “Top Teen Examination” conducted for SSLC students. The students will leave for Japan in the first week of April,” he said, adding so far about 27 students from the district and neighbouring districts were selected through the examination. “Apart from the regular lessons, the course includes environmental programmes and learning the Japanese language.”OISCA is an environmental organisation in Tokyo that supports environmental activities across globe.
