Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore has been offering fellowships for postgraduates to do research in classical languages, said G.Prabhakar, principal of the CIIL, Mysore here on Thursday.
Presiding over a national-level seminar on second language teaching and methodology at Tamil University here, Mr. Prabhakar said closely on the heels of Tamil getting classical status, Kannada and Telugu got the classical status.
He said teaching has now become a challenging task and teaching second language is more complex. Teaching should bring about behavioural changes in students. A teacher should update their knowledge and must be a life long learner, he said.
K.Rangan, former head of department, linguistics, Tamil University, said circumstances make children bilingual as they have to learn one language at home and another outside. Spoken language contains a lot of regional dialects. The CIIL produced grammar books after analysing regional languages. It also taught Indian languages to school teachers. But circumstances had not yet come for students to learn other Indian languages besides learning their own mother tongue and English. T.Chandra Kumar, Convenor, Vice Chancellor In Charge Committee, spoke on the cultural mosaic in India and the need for providing adequate scholarships for foreign students to do research in Indian languages.
