Delhi University's Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE) was tougher than ever this year and it clearly showed in the results declared on Monday.
Close to 11,000 candidates appeared for CATE this year of which only 6,060 qualified, while less than 100 students got a consolidated CATE score of 80%. The number was over 150 last year. A consolidated CATE score is derived from 70% of CATE marks and 30% of Class XII marks. Also, this year's topper scored 90.6%. The top score in 2010 was 92.6%.
"It's not that the candidates this year weren't good enough. Instead it was the exam that was really tough this year which is why the average score is lower this time around," said Sumanyu Satpathy, head, department of English. He added the quality of CATE answer scripts was better than last year. CATE includes two sections — one that checks a students' awareness about literature and another which tests his writing skills. Satpathy said: "Some of the answer scripts had brilliant answers in the second section. This result should not be taken as a reflection of the standard of candidates."
This year, 21 colleges will consider the CATE score for admission to BA (honours) English course. They will declare their individual CATE cutoffs in the first cutoff list to be released by DU on June 15.
