Upset over the poor results of students in the state board examinations, Meghalaya Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh rued that crores of money spend on teachers' training have not yielded gains.

"About 90 per cent of the budget of the education department has been spent on teachers' salary and an amount of Rs 1 crore is being spent annually for teachers' training and yet these expenditures are yet to yield results," Lyngdoh said, two days after the board results were declared.

"At the end of the day, it is the government that is being targeted and this can't be allowed to continue. The teachers cannot run away from responsibility," she said in the aftermath of media criticism over the results.

The pass percentage in this year's Secondary School Examination is 46.34 per cent, with just 3,775 students of the total of 36,122 managing first pision marks.

Lyngdoh claimed that the new evaluation system adopted this year, in which the average of five of the total six subjects are counted, have benefited some 750 students.

Non-performing schools would be asked for explanation and pulled up for negligence, she said.

Seeking the cooperation of teachers, parents and others to ensure a better education system, the minister said a Committee would be formed to look into various aspects.

The committee would seek suggestions from all concerned to pinpoint the loopholes in the system.
