Kolkata: The phones have not stopped ringing at Nishita Baid’s house since her Madhyamik results were out.
The student from National High Girls scored 85.6 per cent, making her one of the top four in the school. “I scored 94 per cent in maths which is like the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said.
Nishita plans to take up science in the future.
Sohini Sengupta of Ballygunj Shikha Sadan, who got 84 per cent, was not so happy. “The results were okay,” said Sohini, who is also planning to take up science and sit for her pre-medical exams.
“I am so happy that I got 96 in physical science,” she added.
Partho Sengupta, Sohini’s father was unhappy with his daughter’s results. “I was expected somewhere between 86 and 87 per cent. She should have done much better,” he said. “I hope that she makes up for it in her higher secondary. I want her to take up science and do really well.”
Most students were worried about whether they would get into the science stream.
Akash Jha from St Lawrence School got 76 per cent. He was satisfied with his marks apart from life science. “I was expected 90 per cent but got 73 per cent. I don’t think that I will be able to get into the science stream of my school since I am 12 marks short and will have to apply to another school. I’d have been happier if I’d done better,” he said.
Some students were surprised by their results. “I was surprised at getting four letters,” said Srijoni Boseroy from Ballygunj Shikah Sadan. She scored 79.73 per cent.
Not all were sure about what stream they wanted to take. “I am happy but I am not sure about whether I want to take commerce or science,” said Gaurav Mahindhar from National High School who scored 76 per cent.
Arunimal Paul from Silver Point in Kasba scored 81 per cent, making her the second highest in her school. “I am not happy with my results as I was expecting more. I messed up my geography paper by scoring just 68. I plan to take up arts as I want to take up English honours and think that the 87 per cent I got in my English will give me an edge,” she said.
Sudeshna Banerjee, Vice-principal of Ballygunj Shiksha Sadan was happy with the results. “Ninety-six students sat for the exam and all of them passed got a first division. I think that is a great achievement. We have 40 stars. One of the girls scored 100 out of 100 in maths. We need to improve our history and geography results though,” she said.
