The University of Mumbai on Wednesday evening announced the TYBSc results in several subjects.
Despite the teachers' strike, which had crippled the practical as well as the evaluation process of the written exams, the university managed to come out with the results within 40 days of the last exam in April.
The success rate of TYBSc students in statistics, chemistry, life sciences, botany, microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology this year was just 50.25%. Of the 10,108 students who appeared for the exams this year, only 2,071 secured a first class.
Last year, the pass percentage in chemistry, life sciences, botany, zoology, biotechnology andbiochemistry was 61.34. This year, the results have dipped in most subjects compared to last year.
"The Science results are generally poor every year. The quality of students seeking admissions in this stream is deteriorating every year as mostly those who do not get a seat in engineering or medical only pursue pure science. Now, as the number of engineering seats has increased, it is easy to getting into the technical line," said Madhuri Pejaver, dean of science.
"Even the first and second year results are poor every year. It is a matter of great concern to me as the dean of the faculty," she added. TYBSc students faced a lot of stress during their practicals.
A professor said that students would go to their colleges every day to check if the practical exams would be conducted because the teachers were on strike and refused to participate in exam duty.
"We are not sure if the university has conducted the marks' settling meeting this year, where senior professors meet and discuss the grace marks to be given to students. But nothing can be said for sure as science results have always been poor," said another professor.
