Two city students have jointly topped GATE with a perfect 1,000 score in a field of 10 lakh examinees, making this the second straight year that Kolkata has grabbed top honours in the prestigious, fiercely competitive national exam.
The euphoria over the success of JU's Shimul Dam and Besu's Bibaswan Chatterjee was, however, tinged with disappointment that the city had fallen short of last year's feat — in GATE 2012, six Bengal students, five of them from Kolkata, shared the top three spots.
GATE, an abbreviation for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, is conducted jointly by the IITs and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore for admission to postgraduate courses. The results for this year test were declared on Friday. City students also managed the fourth and fifth positions this year, both taken by JU students. While Abhratanu Pal shared fourth spot with Ashed Nabeel of Calicut, the fifth place went to Rupam Pal.
AK Ray, vice-chancellor of Besu, said, "Perhaps, Kolkata did a shade better last year since the second and third positions too went to two candidates from the city."
