The unusual delay in publishing the first year B.Tech results of the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has made students nervous, but the university says that its responsibility vis-a-vis engineering examinations is reaching unmanageable levels.
The university used to release the first year B.Tech. results in October but this time, they are not out even in the second week of November.
Students who are appearing for their third semester exams in the third week of this month say they are in a complete flap over the delay.
Authorities attributed the delay to the computerisation it is introducing in the B.Tech. examination system from this year. “We are moving to a paperless format with the online registration system for the exam. From now, students will be able to access the results of various semesters using a unique identification number,” said the controller of examinations, Thomas J. Mambra.
At present, MGU has the maximum number of self-financing (SF) engineering colleges among all universities in state. “We have 39 engineering colleges while Kannur University has seven. We have to value three lakh answer books across semesters every year which is quite huge,” said Mr Mambra.
He explained that due to lack of experienced teachers with M.Tech, the varsity is forced to deploy those with B.Tech degrees from SF colleges.
“The deterioration in quality affects the evaluation process so students may not be properly valued and the marks they deserve not given,” he added.
He said the number of students with supplementaries (those who had failed in previous semesters) is also increasing and this number is up to three times higher in SF colleges than in government and aided colleges.
“This reflects on the quality of SF colleges and increases the burden on the examination wing” he said.
